My name is Can't

That is the message that the Shiv Sena,Mr.Ashok Chavan and Mr.Sharad Pawar seem to be giving the world.Put forth into action by Mr.Shah Rukh Khan's faux pas, it's amazing how the issue of a movie release has even sidelined the nationwide protests over price-rise and other trivial matters of national importance such as the number of people on the streets continuing to freeze to death in the winter, our drastic drop in farm produce and the growing impudence of our neighbouring nations.

In his interview Mr.Shah Rukh Khan has stated that you don't choose players to prove a point, but for their utility in your team.In fact this is the first thing he should have said instead of saying that Pakistani players should have been picked and not treated the way they were.In justifying his own team's selection policies was he implying that the other teams should have picked someone.I'm sure the other teams also chose the player they wanted. But in airing all his views he has created a faux pas which is exposing the oft repeated diatribe of the Shiv Sena and the ineptitude of  our political class.

The Shiv Sena is doing it's best to whip up the frenzy of it's misplaced ideologies.Be it the now too boring 'Marathi Manoos' cry, an opportunistic concern for Indian students in Australia or it's current conversion of a non-issue such as Shah Rukh Khan's comments into an unprecedented Publicity campaign for his latest movie, they are time and again proving they are capable of  making a mountain of a mole-hill and threaten the public into a fearful submission of peace. In my opinion, after the Nehru-Gandhis this is yet another dynastic polity which hopes to cash in on the family name.

Mr.Ashok Chavan and the police have reacted with several measures and assurances to prevent any violence. But of what use is arresting a 1600 shiv-sainiks without arresting the Thackerays- the chief perpetrators of fomenting trouble.During India's Independence struggle , along with all the freedom fighters even Mahatma Gandhi would be arrested. So the arrest of 1600 shiv sainiks is sheer humbug if their leader whom they so faithfully follow is allowed to get away with making inflammatory remarks.Perhaps our politicians suffer from selective discrimination.

Responding to yet another threat of the Sena to disrupt IPL matches with Australian players in it,  Mr.Sharad Pawar our Agriculture Minister ( owner of the IPL team called 'The suicidal farmers') saw it a graver threat than the plight of our farmers and the unaffordable food prices of millions of Indians to meet Mr.Bal Thackeray and to assuage him about the credentials of the Australian players appearing in the IPL.Such fine statesmanship from a man whose party requests Indians to eat less sugar to bring prices of sugar down.

Such actions send mixed signals to the tolerant public who bear the acrimony that politicians fling at each other.Mumbai is perhaps the most resilient city on the face of this Earth, surely it deserves better.
