Congress Happy at Narendra Modi's appointment

Amidst the development of the new NCERT primary English text book, where A for apple is being replaced by recent phrases provided by politics, the Congress on Friday reacted happily to the announcement of Narendra Modi's elevation as the BJP's Prime Ministerial Candidate. Congress party strategists have their task cut out for them as BJP has primed Narendra Modi to become the single point of failure for their party.

"With great power comes great responsibility" - made popular in Spiderman, comes to Modi as he now needs to cast his net of acceptability far and wide. The reason's for Advani's annoyance is known only to him. Whether the denial of that role to him, has led him to feel annoyed is a speculative guess for anyone but Advani himself. But let us give credit to the octagenarian statesman who has made an impact to the BJP's growth and set aside the personal aspiration angle for a while.

One of the value propositions that the BJP has been subtly trying to project is that unlike the Congress which is showcasing the scion of a famous surname as the man to lead them, the BJP has been trying to project itself as a party with multiple leaders of similar stature. The loyal spin doctors of the Congress who must be fatigued in parrying questions on the capability of their darling must be breathing a sigh of relief and could also probably give a tip or two to their counterparts in the BJP - who now have to both hail 'The Chosen One' and confirm that 'All is Well'. Modi's appointment will perhaps dent that overall advantage the party had in the present circumstances and could actually prove to be a shot in the arm for the Congress.

It is a prolonged incubation period for Modi until the next General elections. In between these general elections would be the four assembly elections in MP,CG, Rajasthan and Delhi. In MP and CG, the BJP has had two CMs as equally successfully as Narendra Modi's administration in Gujurat. Herein lies the next self-created dilemma for the BJP. Projections indicate that the respective CM's might have done enough work on their own to merit re-election. If Modi is to campaign in these two states he will have to be careful not to eclipse the individual leadership of the respective CMs. Rajasthan and Delhi have blown hot and cold for the BJP and an anti-incumbency factor is present every election. The BJP is already in an advantageous position in these states and injecting Modi here is like adding more Sugar in the sweet milk,so that the resultant cream can skim itself towards Rajpath. However, if the BJP were to fare poorly in even one of these states, especially Rajasthan or Delhi- it is advantage Congress again. In fact we might have Manish Tewari and Abhishek Manu Singhvi singing praises of SS Chouhan and Dr.Raman Singh should the BJP win in MP and CG, but lose in the other two places.

Coming back to Mr.Advani, still keeping his personal aspirations aside,a public endorsement of Modi's candidature by him leaves the BJP with no back-up plan in case they face any setbacks enroute to the next General Elections.Yes, this author has only seen other leading figures of the BJP only on news channels and parliament debates and not in public rallies - this article doesnt factor popular perception of Modi by the cadres. But media projection of "The Party with a difference' as a 'Party with differences' is playing right into the lap of the Congress. To quote from Paulo Coelho "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it". Right now even the BJP maybe unwittingly part of that universal conspiracy in helping cong achieve what they want.
