DGP Rathore: Haunted by Ruchika or Hunted by the Media?

India has almost 2000 fast track courts to mete out justice to those who seek it.However the distinction of the fastest court in India must go to the Indian Media. In between showing breaking news of who is in or out of "Big Boss", celebrity break-ups and who is the best Khan of all ,nothing hogs the TRP for them as much as a "Trial by Media". We must thank the media for tilting the balance of justice in favour of those aggrieved by relentlessly hounding the perpetrators of injustice and handing down the verdict by it's crony jury of eminent right thinking Indian citizens like Mahesh Bhatt et al.

DGP Rathore is probably guilty on all counts , and all his actions to cover his tracks will probably be uncovered in a few more days when the can of worms is opened. What goes around, comes around so he will get what he deserves for the part he has paid in the death of Ruchika and the tribulations endured by her family. It is indeed a matter of grave concern that the investigation and trial lasted almost 19 years and only a puny punishment has been awarded. People get 6 months of imprisonment for travelling without a ticket on the train, so considering that a life has been lost 6 months for 19 years of proceedings sounds unjust (http://www.hinduonnet.com/fline/fl1726/17260360.htm) , (http://www.indianexpress.com/news/19-years-later-ruchika-girhotras-tennis-partner-returns-for-judgment-day/556732/), . While these concerns should be rightly brought out by the media and the facts of the case must be presented to the consumers of news, it is inappropriate that every media channel turns the case into a "reality show" and pats itself on the back as the harbinger of justice by bringing the guilty to book.

What then of women who get stripped naked, beaten up and paraded in towns in India? Why doesn't the media run a campaign to make sure the guilty get hanged here. Is it because those poor women who suffer the humiliation cannot give the media soundbytes or is it because Mahesh Bhatt and Co find these issues too trivial to comment on. What of people who request the media for help in tracing their brothers and sister's who are kidnapped or go missing under mysterious circumstances (http://saveanandprakash.blogspot.com/) ,(http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=133213196563). Does the media not help because it does not contain the essential elements of a blockbuster reality show or it misses all the ingredients required for sensation or simply because these are routine matters in India.

Sensational news is hedonism for Indian Media, until then real news and ordinary people will have to wait their turn.
